This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students haven't discovered the joy of sitting and listening to a book being read to them. I'm sure many of you, like myself, would run up to your mom as a child and beg her to read you your favorite story! My students need the chance to experience that joy of being read to.

I have 26 energetic, ready-to-learn second graders!

I am thrilled to see their enthusiasm for learning and their drive to become better readers! Their school is located in a low socioeconomic area in which 88% of the students are considered economically disadvantaged. Over half of the kids in my class are English language learners and the school's resources are very limited. With 26 kids, they have many different reading levels and it is hard to meet all their needs.

My Project

My students need a listening center. If I had a listening center in my classroom, it would be used everyday. It would be incorporated as one of my stations during our reading group time. I can see students engaged and excited to go to the listening station. Hearing a book being read to them will teach them fluency and expression. I know that this will help my struggling students move up reading levels! The best part is this is something that will help my students year after year.

A listening center would greatly help my students literacy skills.

All children love to be read to. Do you remember being a child and having your parent read to you at night? A lot of my students don't have this opportunity. Many of my students come from a single, working parent home. No one is there at night to help them with school work, let alone read with them. A listening center would give students the chance to hear exciting books being read to them.
