My Students

The students in my classroom are deaf and hard of hearing.

The ages in my class are 4 through 7 and each student wears hearing aids or cochlear implants. Children in my classroom do not have many opportunities for meaningful learning outside of school due to their language and communication barrier. Everything that these children learn is taught "on purpose", as their hearing loss inhibits them from learning things incidentally. A majority of deaf individuals learn through hands-on, visual learning. In addition, the majority of the children in my classroom are boys. Spending the day sitting in their seat doing paper and pencil work is difficult for them for a variety of reasons! The best days are when I put out materials they can get their hands on, explore, and manipulate.

My Project

I have requested various hands-on science materials that will allow my students to explore science concepts. These materials will allow them to learn various aspects of science in a fun and meaningful way for their gender and age range. In addition, I have requested several items that will allow my students to work independently after science concepts have been mastered as a class. Because deaf children are taught most concepts very directly, transferring these concepts to independent work can prove difficult for them. These center type materials will provide them opportunities to become independent learners in the classroom as well.

My students are wonderful children with HUGE hearts and endless potential!!!

School provides them with the majority of their meaningful learning opportunities, and these materials will benefit them in a variety of ways!
