The students in my classroom are deaf and hard of hearing. The ages in my class are 4 through 7 and each student wears hearing aids or cochlear implants. Children in my classroom do not have many opportunities for meaningful learning outside of school due to their language and communication barrier. Everything that these children learn is taught "on purpose", as their hearing loss inhibits them from learning things incidentally. A majority of deaf individuals learn through hands-on, visual learning. In addition, the majority of the children in my classroom are boys. Spending the day sitting in their seat doing paper and pencil work is difficult for them for a variety of reasons! The best days are when I put out materials they can get their hands on, explore, and manipulate.
