I am a teacher of a wonderful third-grade class in Nevada. I currently teach in a Title I school filled with eager students willing to learn to be responsible citizens.
To help my students improve their education I want to start incorporating movement into the school day.
Research shows that movement can benefit school performance and behavior in the classroom. I know that if I sit too long I tend to lose focus and for my students that can mean failure.
My Project
According to Dr. John Ratey, an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, activity breaks during the school day create better learners because of the impact of movement on the brain.
School days can be long, so having breaks makes my students more productive.
When I am able to give my students chances to exercise, their attention systems work more, so that means they are paying better attention, they are able to deal with more frustration and the rigor in the classroom
A quick run with a soccer ball or 5 minutes to jump rope can make all the difference in my students' day. Challenge them to a game of HORSE or four square and they will be willing to face the challenges I give them back in the classroom.
The addition of soccer balls, cones, and jump ropes will provide for some great activity choices for my students.
