My Students

Math is fun! Math is exciting! Solving math problems is like being a detective! Some of my students are shocked to hear me say this because their experience is that math is confusing, boring, doesn't make sense, and is hard. I believe that is because they need more practice with hands on materials.

My school is a Title 1 school and 100% of the students are on free and reduced lunch.

School is the safe place for my students, because many of their neighborhoods are not safe. We are fortunate to have a quality after school program and many students participate. They arrive at school for breakfast and stay throughout supper. School really is a second home for them. Every staff member, from teachers, maintenance workers, para professionals, secretaries, and administration is "all in" when it comes to dedication to the students' success both academically and socially. Character building is an important component in our school. We know that education is the key to escaping poverty and building a better future.

My Project

When my students use the materials I have requested they will have opportunities to see mathematics from a conceptual level. All of the materials will allow them to work with partners and groups. Cooperative learning is the key to advancing understanding of math. It requires students to explain and revise thinking, as well as having productive discourse. When a student has to defend their answers and listen to others, they become more confident mathematicians. When students learn concepts in isolation they are often quickly forgotten. Pop to Win games provide a fun way to review skills and allow students to work in teams to help solidify concepts. Hands-on measurement materials will give students real world experiences with the often confusing concepts of conversions. I can't wait to use the fraction multipliers with my students because they will see exactly why the product is smaller than the factors when multiplying fractions!

They will understand how math is important in real world problem solving and they will learn to work with others to solve those problems. The skills students learn when they get out of the workbooks and begin doing actual mathematics will build solid conceptual understanding of math skills that will build a foundation that lasts a lifetime. You will be enriching their lives in many ways.
