Hello! I am a third grade teacher at a moderate poverty school. I tried an experiment with technology, borrowing resources for a limited time from my local BOCES.

I rented two Wii gaming systems, as well as a vocabulary development game, My Word Coach. I also rented Wii Sports for indoor playtime. (If you live in New York, you know that many days are deemed indoor playtime during the winter months!) The children had a list of rules in order to use the Wii during literacy time. They must hand in their homework and morning work, as well as complete all of their work to the best of their ability. A change seemed to happen overnight. My unmotivated students were double checking that they had homework in their backpacks. My little pros at work avoidance were going immediately to their seats to complete morning work. My "bare minimum" students were finally showing effort in their writing and displaying enthusiasm in their reading. My students were taking an interest in their learning! And all of this work was being done in order to play vocabulary development games for fifteen minutes during literacy time! Now I know that this was an extrinsic motivation and I braced myself for the students deciding they didn't care about playing Wii and going back to their old ways.

But it didn't happen. Instead, students were actually getting interested in the books they finally started reading. They were enjoying the praise of well written stories and were motivated to keep going. They were relieved at play time knowing that they had completed work for the day and could enjoy recess care-free.

I am only able to rent these gaming systems for 4 weeks. However, I would like this integration of technology to be a permanent fixture in the room. I have discovered more academic games such as Jumpstart: Escape from Adventure Island for my low readers and challenging games such as Big Brain Academy for my higher level thinkers. I also have found simple Wii games that read a story to the children: something that they love and that I cannot provide for them while working with small reading groups. Not only will you help our class use technology as a tool for learning, you will improve their literacy skills as they play these game, and help keep them motivated to try their best in school!
