My class is part of an elementary school that serves Pre-K and Kindergarten, approximately 250 students each year. Our school is located in Fostoria, Ohio, a small, culturally diverse community. Our school population includes 38% of students being African American, Hispanic, or Multi-racial which is more than the state average of 27%. At least 50% of our students receive free or reduced lunches. The average household income is just under $40,000.
We are a Leader In Me School based off of The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People; we are currently in our third year.
Our students are learning 21st Century skills that will allow them to be a leader in every aspect of their lives; their school, community, the world, and their own life. Each of our students have a genius within them; our job is to shine a light on that genius and inspire leaders.
My Project
Our class would love to have a listening center in our room! This would allow students the opportunity to have fun, engaging stories read to them while they listen and follow along in the book. Many students may not have the opportunity to have stories read to them very often so a listening center will be a huge benefit to them.
Students will love having a quiet listening center where they can enjoy classic stories being read to them.
This quiet time also allows students some down time away from the noise and excitement that automatically comes being in a kindergarten classroom. This center will also encourage students to read books for learning and entertainment as they continue to grow.
