My Students
I work with students that come from under served communities that are furthest from educational justice and provide them with social and emotional support throughout the day. I also work with families and community members in providing after school enrichment that is full of physical fitness and STEM programming that keeps both their minds and bodies healthy. I’m the leader and founder of the school’s Black Family Council.
My goal is to always serve my students and their families to the best of my abilities, and to develop and support positive behavior in all of our students.
I teach and interact with over 400 kindergarten through 5th grade students during the course of a week, so every day is a new and different experience. We are a school with students who come from a variety of economic backgrounds.
We have implemented a School-Wide Positive Behavior and Intervention Support (PBIS) plan over the last 4 years, "Check-In/Check-Out" (CICO). Through CICO we work to encourage positive behaviors in our students and develop the social skills that will help them achieve their future goals. Our students’ confidence thrives when their social skills are developed in a positive way.
My students are awesome!
My Project
Students love LEGO sets and they love to build and create. Although we’re back in some capacity, many students only leave their homes to attend school and return back home immediately. Since the start of the pandemic, I’ve seen their anxiety and stress levels increase. My students have mentioned having very high interest in LEGO bricks.
LEGOS truly takes their minds off the pandemic and provides a focus, and it helps them to understand and manage their focus in connecting to their goals.
Using their social emotional learning techniques students will make responsible decisions. In conversations with students this year I've come to understand their love for LEGO building sets. They find them relaxing and challenging as well. Many students enjoy architecture too!
Providing the students with these LEGO sets will motivate them to put their laptops and tablets down, and work to create, set goals, and build, which will be amazing! The students have worked hard this year. Supplying the students with rigorous LEGO sets to improve their character and mental development is very much needed at this time.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
