We Love Sticky Notes!

My students need post-it notes and chart paper to gather, organize, and analyze evidence for essays based on literature and nonfiction texts.

My Students

Gathering evidence for writing an essay on the novel you just read is a tough job, but my students have got to do it every time we finish a book read in class or at home!

My students are advanced 8th graders studying English and History at a public school in the underfunded state of California.

They are hardworking, determined, and eager to learn! They come from diverse backgrounds, but all plan on going to college and doing great things with their future.

My Project

Each time my students write an essay, we begin by gathering "evidence" from the novel collectively using post-its. The students then get an opportunity to sort the post-its, discuss them, analyze their meaning, and choose the quotations that work best for proving their ideas. We often chart this process as a class on chart paper though it has become nearly impossible to get real chart paper so we are forced to use construction paper or pieces of butcher paper from time to time. By donating post-its and sticky chart paper, my students will be able to continue to develop their understanding of quality writing about works of literature and nonfiction texts. This will build their written communication skills and give them another avenue for discussion in class.

Post-its allow students to collaborate on their ideas, share their ideas with others, and move their thinking around to improve the organization and flow of their ideas in writing.

Chart paper allows us to document, as a class and in small groups, the process we use for future reference so students eventually bring these skills into their working memory.
