My Students

I remember discovering my love for reading in elementary school, and I will never be able to describe the amazing feeling I got when I was able to read a book and feel as though I was in it. My students have not yet been able to experience this, due to the fact that our school barely has a library.

My students are all amazing and silly human beings.

They are extremely curious and are always very affectionate and caring. One of the defining characteristics of my students is their love for reading, especially their love for being read to. Sadly, because I do not have many books, a great deal of my students are unable to get the time they need to read by themselves, and as a result, are not given the chance to truly blossom as readers. Our school is located in an urban area of California. Almost 100% of the students at my school receive free and reduced lunch, and virtually all of the students speak English as their second language. We received school supply donations over the summer so that our students could have backpacks and basic essentials for school, but even with that help, we still have many students who are in need.

My Project

I am requesting an upper grade leveled library. This way my students will be able to gain independence as readers, and will be able to receive the differentiated instruction that they deserve. With a leveled library, my students will be able to choose their own books and read texts that are at their level which will help support them in becoming more advanced and independent readers. Having a leveled library means giving my students a chance to excel and grow as individuals. It means they will have a chance to read for knowledge and pleasure at home and at school. If I were to have a leveled library, it would help me to personalize instruction for my students through guided reading groups and one-on-one instruction. My students would be able to gain rich and meaningful reading skills that they would not be able to obtain otherwise. Having a leveled library would give my students what they not only need, but what they deserve.

I am a first year teacher from Cal's DTE program, who is trying to put together an inspiring 4th grade classroom library, in which students have the ability to select books that suit their reading levels and interests.This will give my students the chance to grow as readers and it will also give my students the chance to learn about new and interesting topics.
