My students are incredible. I have 24 motivated English Language Learners who are eager to learn. My students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds with limited resources available to them. We are a Title I, Performance Improvement School, with one hundred percent of our students on the free lunch program. Many parents work two jobs and are struggling to support their families.
Though their outside environment may not be conducive to learning, my students have an insatiable love of learning.
I know that if we provide them with the right support, resources, and opportunities, they can experience success.
My Project
We celebrate World Culture day, and each grade level teaches a specific continent. Second grade learns about Africa, and we choose what country we would like to teach. I chose Madagascar, and the children love it.
We are performing the Rhythms of the Highlife with all of our 2nd graders, and it will be spectacular!
I want to incorporate art in our lessons. We will make African necklaces out of paper plates. The plates are painted, and we add colorful sequins to their designs. I want to use the African fabric to make headwear for the students. This can be cut in strips and wrapped around their heads. Students will wear them during our World Culture day performance.
The drying rack will be used during painting. I presently don't have one, so we just put our paintings outside to dry. On windy days, the paper flies all over the place, and the artwork is ruined. We also put them inside our classroom on the floor. This drying rack is so nice because it holds 24 pieces of art all in one little rack with wheels!
