My students remind me everyday that they are the bright lights of our future. I teach a very diverse group of students in a full day inclusion classroom at a public magnet school in Savannah, Georgia. My students come from all across the county and from all different backgrounds, abilities and socioeconomic statuses. Despite these differences, they all have one thing in common - they are kindergartners.
My students come in everyday excited to learn.
A parent of one of my students stopped me at open house and wanted me to know their son said, "I'm so excited for kindergarten, you can't even imagine!" When I asked her how he liked the first day, she said he told her, "It was better than I ever dreamed!" This kind of infectious joy fills my classroom every single day.
My Project
I have such a fun group of students this year! They love learning and especially love to read and write. One of their favorite activities lately has been curling up in our library with a good book after their work is finished. Now that they are really picking up on reading, I have found that our classroom library doesn't have enough high interest books for some of my emerging readers.
I love that my students love reading, but I want them to have better access to books that they are interested in, that challenge them and that they can be excited about.
This project is going to provide books for readers at multiple levels in my classroom. These are books and characters I know my students already love. Biscuit is a favorite for many of my students and my girls think Fancy Nancy is a hoot! I can't wait to get more leveled texts into the hands of my eager readers.
