Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My third graders have a thirst for knowledge and thrive in an environment that allows them a variety of hands-on learning opportunities. However, as a teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. All of our students receive free breakfast and 90% receive free or reduced-price lunch. Most of my students come from low-income homes, many where English is not the primary language, and the learning gap starts early because of health problems at birth that slow cognitive, social, and emotional development.
My goal is to provide a comfortable, safe environment where my students have all the resources they need to be successful learners.
My Project
Ever watch a student go from a reluctant reader to a voracious reader? It's amazing what the right book in the hands of a child can do! My third grade students are obsessed with reading graphic novels, but we don't have enough in our classroom library to go around!
Graphic novels have helped even my most reluctant readers develop a love for books!
With the fast-paced and vibrant graphics of technology, the format of graphic novels catches and keeps the attention of my students. I've watched my students get lost in the pages of these books and grow to become more confident independent readers. Graphic novels are high-interest for all reading levels, so it's a win for everyone!
