My students need different options for seating during the day. I've included multiple choices for flexible seating that would meet the needs of all of my students.

My Students

Recess at -15 degrees? No problem! We are a class of 20 in North Pole, Alaska. One of the unique things about living in Alaska is that we go outside until 20 degrees below zero. In our community it is Christmas year-round. Living near Santa is pretty cool, but we constantly have to make sure that we are on our best behavior.

We love learning and sharing new things with each other.

We come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Together we create a diverse classroom of learners that work together to build a happy and energetic learning environment.

My Project

Imagine walking into a classroom as a student and having the ability to sit wherever you would like. You could have the option of sitting on a cushy beanbag chair, wobble chair, lying on a comfy rug, or even on a stability ball.

Student engagement and motivation are increased when students have the freedom and responsibility to decide where they work.

Students are more focused when they are trusted to make decisions about their own learning. Students also learn about themselves as learners and become more independent workers. Students will be able to use the exercise balls, wobble stools, regular stools, or balance disk at their desks or around the room. Students will also be able to use the rug as a comfortable place to read a book or complete their work. The chair bands will be an option for the students who constantly need to be moving. In addition to all of these new seating choices, the students will have two more beanbag chairs to use during their work time. More choices about the materials that students can use during flexible seating will meet more of their needs and will give them more options about where they can complete their work.
