"Books and doors are the same thing. You open them, and you go through into another world" - Jeanette Winterson
In my class I have a diverse group of students who are all connected through their love of books.
I have a class full of excited and energetic 5 and 6 year olds.
Our school is a title one school, meaning the majority of the population we serve comes from low-income homes. Our school is full of diversity and strong in community and character. We have a school community where families are involved and children are taught not only reading and math, but also how to become a kind and responsible citizens.
My Project
These books are all part of different units in our Kindergarten class. As a new teacher who hasn't quite built up a classroom library, most of the time I get books for our units from the local library. While this is a good option, sometimes books aren't available, and students are always disappointed when the books they've been immersed in have to go back to the library. Most of the books I have selected are books that have proven to be hits with my students in the past. It is great for these beginning readers to re-read familiar texts and to really develop that love for books and become lifelong readers.
I truly appreciate any donation big or small to my project.
These books will impact many classrooms full of students throughout my teaching career. They will learn about friendship and characters by reading the wonderful Elephant and Piggie stories by Mo Willems. They will learn about self-control through the always popular, "My Mouth is a Volcano." Finally, they will be able to access these books throughout the school year and explore familiar texts as they become excited about books!
