Mrs. Katey from Saint Martinville LA is requesting flexible seating through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students flexible seating options for our classroom.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students come to school happy to tackle each day's lesson! They are learning to work hard to set and meet goals each week. Our school is a Title I school located in a low-socioeconomic area in rural Louisiana.
Despite the obstacles and hardships they face each day, my students still come to school with a smile on their face and big giant hugs to give.
They love working together to achieve greatness. My first graders look at each other as though they are a family! First grade rocks!!
In our class, my students and I build and maintain a positive classroom environment. As 21st century learners, my students are taking control of their education and becoming more engaged in learning. Having choice allows students to have a more positive outlook and have fun while learning.
The option of flexible seating gives students the ability to learn responsibility and develop self control in an age appropriate way!
Currently my students have the option of choosing to move around, stand at their desks, sit on the floor, and occasionally lay on the carpet. These options are not always ideal or the most comfortable positions for my wiggly little first graders. Making sure students are emotionally and physically comfortable is essential for student motivation. Studies show that children, especially those with learning disabilities, have shortened attention spans and difficulty remaining seated during class. Our school is located in a very low-socioeconomic area in rural Louisiana. We do not have enough resources to make flexible seating an option, which is why I have chosen this amazing community to help make this dream come true!
This project is Phase 1 of my classroom transition to being totally out regular desk chairs and engulfed in choices for seating. My first project on Donors Choose was a horseshoe table to work in small groups with my students to allow more one on one work. It was fully funded and has been God-sent for myself and my students. This project I am proposing is transitioning our small group table to flexible seating in order for myself to better understand the details in managing a classroom fully of bouncing 6 year olds! I can just see it now... wiggling madness and big smiles!
