Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Some of the highlights of being a first grade teacher are when I am playing baseball and other games with my students during recess. Their laughs and silly body motions remind me of how much fun a childhood is--and should be.
However, these brief playground moments are often quickly forgotten by myself and my 27 first graders as we go back into the classroom to focus on standards and curriculum. While having an academically-focused classrom is very important, the emphasis on standards has decreased the opportunities for student to student interaction in social situations.
Play is a very important part for lower elementary students to develop social skills. It allows them to learn how to communicate, cooperate, and share, as well as many other things. The skills learned through play and other social interactions are the foundations for skills needed in later learning tasks, such as group projects. My goal for my classroom is to create purposeful play situations in which students are able to develop social skills while engaging in learning tasks that further develop a skill or concept we have learned in class. For example, students would use hand puppets to do a story retell to reinforce comprehension, or build a story setting with lego blocks.
My school is in inner-city New York with very limited clean and green space. Play opportunities are not frequent and proper materials are often lacking. The classrom is one place I can provide my students with a safe environment to play, develop social skills, and learn at the same time. To do this, I want to equip my classroom with puppets, a lego set, learning songs, instruments, word-picture puzzles, plastic animals, and some outside toys. The approximate total of this grant is two-hundred dollars. Students in my present class and my future classes will always be able to benefit from these materials. My students deserve to have the same experiences students in other schools do. A childhood is a glorious thing and all students should be able to have one. For my students, these materials will provide my students with a enjoyable environment to develop and learn.
