We Have Some Gneiss Rocks But We Want Fossils Too!

My students need & want comprehensive hands on experiences with the types of fossils found in Georgia & the US that include where, when, & how they formed. These include 3 basic fossil kits, a complete pack of a variety of fossils and a Tyrannosaurus Skull Model.

My Students

If you ask my students what's on the top of their list of what they want to learn in earth science dinosaurs will always be there. Unfortunately most of them have never had the opportunity to handle a "real" fossil or cast of a 5 inch shark tooth or their favorite T-Rex.

My students have such a desire to learn about fossils & dinosaurs & while I have the knowledge to teach them they really want to get their hands on the real thing or even a cast of it.

My 6th grade earth science students are a very diverse mix from a variety of backgrounds. Some are world travelers because their parents are in the military while others have never left the local area or spent time hunting fossils in our beautiful state of Georgia. My kids love to explore the world outside their door & that natural curiosity should be nurtured & allowed to grow. I would love for them to be able to have this opportunity for detailed hands-on discovery & maybe able to create a "mold" or "cast" of their own to take home & share.

My Project

With these fossils & teaching tools I will be able to give my students a much more complete picture of what might be buried in their back yard. They will know what types of fossils they can find in Georgia & the southeast & have a better understanding of what our area was like in the past giving them a better foundation in the fundamentals of earth science. These tools will not only enrich my students knowledge base with them I will better be able to teach our states standards describing how fossils show evidence of our earth's changing surface & climate. Our school has always had to "be creative" with finding resources for science. There has never been money in the budget for this type of unit & the only fossils we have are ones that I have collected from around our state most of which are too delicate for children to handle.

To dig is to discover.

Growing up I was always outside "investigating" something, searching for rocks, bugs, & fossils. Those experiences inspired me to want to share this knowledge & love of discovery with my students. I want them to take the "hard" science classes in high school & they won't do that if they are not inspired with these kinds of experiences in middle school.
