Do you remember your favorite books as a child? If you said "yes", then you could help make a difference in the twenty-two little lives I teach everyday! I have a fun-loving, high-spirited, energetic group of first graders that are excited to learn and love coming to school each day!
Reading is so important and it is the foundational skill for all academics across the curriculum.
I work in a Title 1 school with many disadvantaged children. My students are among the 73% of students that receive free and reduced lunches. More than three-quarters of the students at my school come from low-income households. The high percentage is a telling sign that these students, more than likely, do not have adequate reading materials at home. That means they are depending on ME for appropriate reading materials at their specific reading level.
I have a very special group of first graders this year. Almost half of my class is reading well below grade level. With your help, I will be able to enhance my reading center with books for all to read. Thank you for taking the time to read about my class and their needs!
My Project
My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy visiting throughout the day. Every book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read. In preparation for my new crop of firsties, I decided it was time to level all the books in my reading center. Upon completion, I realized I did not have enough books for my lower level readers to choose from. And when it came time to check their reading levels, almost half of my class was reading below a beginning first grade-level.
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own level.
Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time. They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading comprehension and fluency is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow into stronger, independent readers!
