Help me give my students the materials to help them learn about the world. I plan to turn these paper lanterns into a culminating S.T.E.A.M. Project, where the children will create a model of the world!
My students are an amazing bunch of kids. They come to school every day, eager and ready to learn. What makes them so special is that they come from so many different backgrounds and nationalities and we are constantly learning from each other. Our classroom has become an amazing community of learners.
My class is made up of general education students, special education students and students learning English as a new language.
As you can see, there is a tremendous need to teach with a more hands-on approach so that I can reach and challenge all of the different learning styles in my classroom. There are many different ways I try to incorporate hands-on learning, but the lack of tools prevents me to do so. Unfortunately, many of my students come from low-income families, therefore it is a struggle for them to get the necessary supplies needed to enable them to be successful in school. I am hoping that with DonorsChoose.org my students will be able to get what's needed to progress in 3rd grade.
My Project
The NYC Social Studies Third Grade Curriculum focuses on Communities Around the World. To launch our unit, we begin with many geography lessons, where the children learn about the 7 continents, 5 oceans, and many other aspects of our world. For this project, the students are expected to create the 7 continents on construction paper, label the 5 oceans, and use string to mimic the equator. Once complete, they will glue all of their materials to the paper lanterns, making sure to use spacial and placement correctness. I have completed this project in previous years and the kids ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! They had a blast creating their real life models of the Earth and most importantly it helped them master the world's geography and become successful learners in future lessons
