We Go From Sidewalk To Gallery, With Art Chalks & Charcoal

My students need an assortment of cotton fiber papers in colors to enhance projects drawn with colored chalks and charcoal.

My Students

Kids think it's so much fun to draw on the driveway and sidewalks. I want to bring that enthusiasm into the classroom with chalk pastels. We have a large covered walkway on one end of the school that gets very little use. I want to do one sidewalk chalk project, then come indoors onto good paper.

We go to school in a building that is over fifty years old.

Today our classroom is the old auto body shop. The best thing is, it's big. We're located inside the older part of the town near the railroad tracks. However, our mostly minority students are on the fast track to better educations with a motivated faculty and curriculum opportunities. The arts programs help keep our students engaged in school through music, drama, and visual arts. We are decreasing our drop out rates and improving test scores with innovative programs to keep kids in school, get into colleges and teaching career skills that will provide a savvy workforce for our community. Our community has traditionally been agricultural and textile manufacturing. Families have struggled to cope as many of those jobs go overseas. This generation needs new skills to compete, but they also need exposure to life long habits and hobbies.

My Project

Most years I can only purchase white paper. I supplement this with rolls of recycled paper from the construction business, paper used to cover floors and walls. We've even used tar paper from roofing to get something black. This year I got a big donation of charcoal sticks, white chalk and cheap kids sidewalk chalk. This will be best used on colored papers. I found a web site that shows incredible side walk art for inspiration for the sidewalk project. The sidewalk is available, but we need the paper for the inside projects. Inside I plan a still life project and a portrait project. All three will teach drawing skills, shading and value and color blending. The sidewalk project can be a group activity and the inside projects can be for individual work. The contrast of having a colored background surface will be a new experience and teach the use of highlights, plus positive and negative space to create emphasis.

I have noticed students get more excited about projects if something about the materials are unusual.

They feel like they have reached a higher level of skill and quality. The same project on white paper just isn't as impressive. We display art all over the school from every level and make sure our students participate in shows at several locations and events in the community. The parent, community and peer recognition is so important to the self esteem of our students.
