I teach sixth grade in a small, rural school district in western Pennsylvania. We graduate about 100 students a year. A majority of my students receive free or reduced-price lunches. Though this small town boasts strong community ties, the lower income families of this area are often unable to provide for their children. Our district itself is also experiencing financial hardships and is not always able to provide the students with the resources that they need.
My sixth grade students come to school excited, happy, and are eager to learn every day.
Our classroom goal is to build a community of love, acceptance, and tolerance for everyone. We strive to create an atmosphere where we can have meaningful learning experiences. My students are creative, energetic students who crave time to work independently and expand their horizons!
My Project
As an English Language Arts teacher, I am constantly trying to introduce my students to new books. Reading is how we discover new things and how we develop a positive self-image. The ability to read is a vital skill for functioning in today's society.
Reading is important because it helps to expand the mind and develops the imagination.
A person who knows how to read can educate themselves in any area of life they see fit. People who don’t read or are poor readers often have low opinions of themselves and their capabilities. They feel isolated, and behavior problems surface. As we live in an age abundant with information, reading is the only way to become informed.
I try to teach my students that books are a mirror which reflects their own lives and a window which can give them a peek into someone else's.
These new books will be put in my classroom library for my children to read throughout the year. I am always trying to expand my library to give my students new books that excite and engage them.
