My Students
Paper towels, pens, pencils, binders, transportation, backpacks, new school clothes. There is so much to buy for the beginning of the school year. It's especially difficult for families in need. Imagine if your notebook that you will use for the year was waiting for you on the first day!
My high school students are all English Language Learners that have immigrated to the U.S., specifically Queens, New York, within the last four years.
They come from China, Latin America, Southeast Asia, The Middle East, Korea, etc. They are extremely courageous, and they have, for the most part, many dreams they want to fulfill here through education. Unfortunately many students lack the resources they need to come prepared to class everyday. The teachers at my school work hard to secure these resources to ensure a successful high school experience that paves the way to college and beyond.
My Project
Every day students are expected to enter the classroom quietly and promptly begin working on a "Do Now" activity posted on the board. This activity is a question that students will write or illustrate an answer to, and it takes about 5 minutes or less to complete. The "Do Now" will get them thinking about the topic for the day and it allows students to get right to work, not wasting a minute of their academic day.
As a teacher, I spend time planning these first five minutes carefully, and it is exceedingly frustrating when students don't have the tools they need to get started. I always keep an extra supply of pencils, but where will they write their ideas? Having everything organized in a notebook that stays in the classroom allows the students a place to write their ideas and me a system for assessing their answers on a consistent basis. These "Do Now" questions inspire the students to think critically and share their genius ideas.
