We Celebrate African American Faces in Books

Help me give my students books like Class Act, New Kid, and Hello, Star that represent African American children and their experiences growing up.

My Project

My students are working on a "40 Book Challenge" this year. We have free reading time every day to help students to reach this goal. I have a wonderfully diverse class and want my classroom library to serve as a mirror for all of my students. I want to provide them with reading choices including books with characters that look like them. These books can also serve as windows into the worlds of characters not like a students' own experiences.

With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to see and celebrate African American main characters.

I would like to offer my class more selections that have African American kids as main characters to increase representation and equity in my classroom library. My students enjoy the freedom to choose books that interest them. One of the best ways to motivate kids to read is to have a wide selection of diverse books in the classroom. My students already have shown a strong dedication to their independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with a quality selection of new books.
