This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from low-income families in Camden, New Jersey. They bring joy to me and our entire school with their smiling faces, big hugs and happy hearts.
The students in my class have moderate to severe intellectual disabilities.
Many of them have a diagnosis of downs syndrome or cerebral palsy. They have behavioral, attention and sensory challenges which interfere with their ability to process and retain information in a traditional manner. My students need more alternative and modified educational and sensory resources.
My Project
My students' disabilities cause them to experience the world in different, unique, and challenging ways. They are more sensitive to the variations in the environment. My project contains various tools that will help them encounter the world with better focus.
My students will be able to focus and learn with greater ease as their sensory needs are met.
Items like the compression vest give students a sense of comfort and help with body awareness. The chewy necklaces stops them from chewy and injuring their fingers. Weighted lappers make a big difference in their ability to sit and focus during circle time.
These items can allow for some real learning to take off in my class. These are items that school funding does not typically cover.
