My Students

Our school serves over 450 Kindergarten through 5th grade students in Portland, Maine.

Our city, community, and our students are very diverse and have a wide range of needs.

We work hard to ensure that we are systematically meeting academic, social/emotional, and other developmental needs of all our students.

As a school counselor, I work with all 450 of these students in some capacity to ensure they all have the skills they need to succeed in school, college, and life.

My Project

Students learn a lot from story-telling, and bibliotherapy is an important part of my work as a counselor. When we talk to kids about being an adult and making good choices, they are sick of hearing from us! Students are much more engaged in hearing from characters that look like them.

Let's move beyond "what do you want to do when you grow up?" The books I've requested help students think about what they want for themselves in the future.

Many of the books are about growth mindset - believing that our ability grows with our effort. Several of the books are about jobs and careers. If we can talk about what we might be good at and set goals for our future, we are more likely to connect what we are learning in school and be motivated to work.
