This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach Kindergarten in a primarily Hispanic, Title I public school in Miami, Florida. I teach an extended foreign language program (Spanish) where the goal is for my students to leave my room bilingual and fluent at the appropriate developmental stage.
My students are eager learners that show enthusiasm and interest in learning every day but, have diverse academic and social levels and learning needs.
They are inquisitive and energetic and thrive on being challenged to do their best while exploring new ideas and activities.
One of the areas that poses a bit of difficulty for little ones at this age is visual tracking. This often makes it difficult for them to follow along with activities that require they look at me in order to complete tasks. The most challenging of these is where cutting is concerned. In a world where kids do everything on a computer or a tablet, fine motor skills are sometimes not as finely developed as I would like to see. This is one area where my students are struggling a bit this year.
My Project
How do you help kindergarten students follow instructions for hands on activities such as cutting and pasting, handwriting, finding objects in a picture, etc? It is not always as easy as many people think. In order to give children clear instructions that they can follow easily, modeling what you want them to do is critical. The problem with this is that in order to model what you want them to do, and allow them the opportunity to see what you are doing in the same way they see it, you have to turn your back on them. Anyone that has ever been in a kindergarten class knows that's not a great idea.
The Lumens Ladybug Document Camera will let my kids see things clearly and help them follow the necessary steps to do their work correctly.
This camera not only lets me show the students how to do certain things that require specific steps, it also allows them to see the work on a large board so that my whole class can see well.
This is an excellent tool for my class with its diverse learners. I have kids who have never been to school before and as a result, do not have the skills to hold a scissor or pencil properly. By giving them the chance to see me do things the correct way, I hope to improve their skills in these areas.
