We Can Do It! Experiencing The WW II Era

My students need 25 activity books on World War II to use in class and with their senior citizen buddies.

My Students

What was it like during World War II? Life was so different then compared to how we live today. Is there any way my students can somehow experience that era?

My class is made up of eager fifth grade students.

They love activities where they simulate history, it becomes more real to them. The class ranges from below grade level to gifted in ability. Our school is considered to be at moderate poverty and diversity level. About 600 students attend the K-5 school.

My Project

Secret messages on eggs, hidden codes, spotter airplane models, Rosie the Riveter posters, ration kits, victory gardens, and soldier care packages are just some of the fun activities in these books. The accompanying information and vocabulary will enable my students to have a first-hand look at daily life at home and on the front lines during these war years. Constructing some of the projects with their senior citizen buddies and reading the book together will lead to great discussions and interaction. They will learn even more from someone who actually experienced it!

The Greatest Generation is quickly disappearing along with the chance to learn first hand from them. The service, sacrifice, and struggles of World War II are explained and explored through creative projects in this book. Students will have a better idea of how they can serve others and their country now and as they grown up.
