It is amazing what kids will do with old fashioned paper and writing utensils. In today's high tech world, there is still a love for paper, markers, and hands-on creations. I want to further stimulate their love for writing by building up our writing center.
I am a kindergarten teacher in a low income inner city school.
They are eager to learn and explore, which is natural for 5 year olds. Our school has a long literacy block in the mornings, of which writing is a huge part. The kids have all been excelling in this area by engaging in fun, interactive lessons. They love to show off their work and are so proud of themselves. "Look at what I made!" and "I can read it to you!" are the words mostly uttered by my students on a daily basis.
My Project
They absolutely love to use the writing center. I keep it stocked as best I can with lots of paper, markers, crayons, stamps, etc. It is amazing to see the things they create, such as books. They will create a book about a personal experience or rewrite a book that we have read together. It is so heartwarming to watch them put their pages together along with the request of the stapler to bind their book. They go the full mile by creating a title and cover for their book. I thought it would be super exciting for them to have more writing center activities and tools to work with while making their creations. Children are indeed writers when given the tools and materials to do so.
I believe this will make a difference in their lives by further bringing out their natural writing abilities and sparking their imaginations.
Children really are writers when given the opportunity!
