We Are Worth It: Materials Needed to Teach Financial Literacy
Help me give my students learning experiences where they develop a deeper understanding of wants vs. needs by providing laminating pages, velcro, and additional resources to our prekindergarten classroom.
For many of my students, this is their first experience in school. I want them to love coming into our classroom and strive to instill a love of learning at the start. My students have severe special needs and require specialized instruction. The principles of applied behavior analysis are incorporated throughout the day.
All students are capable of learning and deserve a classroom environment where they are comfortable, safe, welcomed, and supported.
My students spend part of their day included with typically developing peers. Many of my students are learning how to communicate and develop their social skills. In my program, they develop the skills that they will need to be successful within a group setting. I work hard to provide my students new, engaging, hands-on lessons so they have fun at school and DonorsChoose makes so much of this possible for our classroom.
My Project
Financial literacy is a skill that can be taught at a young age. It begins with students learning early math concepts, such as how to identify their numbers, count, sort, compare (more, less, equal to) as well as add and subtract as they get older. With the materials that I'm requesting, I will be able to spark interest, foster and build on these emerging math skills as well as teach my students about the difference between wants and needs.
In my classroom, we start teaching financial literacy and the difference between wants and needs in students' daily social interactions by using simple directions and first/then language.
For example, first I need these materials to create lessons at school/lessons that be taken home for my remote students and then, I want to use the materials, such as the velcro and laminating sheets to make lasting activities for my students. These activities will be things such as choice boards, story boards and other visual supports which help them to participate in group activities. The TeachersPayTeachers gift card will allow me to find additional resources in the event we go fully remote. Headphones and adapters will allow my students to use my classroom iPads to access curriculum as well as games that help develop math skills. Previously, we were sharing one set of headphones, but now with safety and sanitation in mind, I would like for each iPad to have its own set.
Many adults are still learning how to be responsible with their finances and how to wait rather than receive instant gratification. Please help me give my students the opportunity to practice their financial literacy skills by distinguishing between their wants and needs.
