My students need a listening center with multiple sets of durable headsets, as well as 4 durable headsets with microphones to use at the computer center.
Do you remember how soothing it was to listen to someone read to you? My students love going to the listening center each week and listening to stories. Yet, oftentimes the CD player won't work, and the headsets are falling apart! We have the same issues with the headsets at our computers!
My inner city 5th graders are passionate, energetic learners who come from various backgrounds.
Many of my students are refugees who have come to the United States for a better life; while others are from low-income, single parent households where much of the responsibility of caring for themselves falls on their shoulders.
Special education students mainstream into my classroom, as the expectations for learning are very high. Despite these hardships, my students always put forth 110% with their learning, especially when I'm able to incorporate technology they may not have exposure to at home.
My Project
A working listening center and headsets with microphones may not sound like a life changer, yet for my kids, it is. It is disheartening for auditory learners to go to the listening center, where they can feel successful as readers, just to find out the CD player isn't working, or that the headsets are falling apart.
Likewise, my visual learners love going to the computers to watch educational video clips where they can pause and rewind to adjust to their individual learning needs. This is difficult without durable headsets.
I ordered a few pairs of headsets with microphones last year, and the excitement of my learners to record their own voices for reading fluency, listen to themselves, and re-record for improvement was immense! That is why I'm requesting headsets that have that capability as well. These materials will help me differentiate for all sorts of learning styles, as well as helping my refugee students who are still learning English.
While these materials may seem simple to you, they are valuable to the learning of the students in my classroom.
In many districts, these materials are a given; something many teachers cannot imagine not having. Yet, I need your help to provide my students with these basic materials that will enhance their learning experience. In a technological age, it is important that my students are exposed to various technological mediums in their learning to enhance their 21st century skills.
