This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

During these difficult times my students need inspiration. Sometimes inspiration comes from people who have experienced a difficult journey and can still have love for people. This is what P. Thomas does in his book "Down these mean streets". He speaks from the heart and inspires people.

My students live a community plagued with gang violence and poverty.

Their roots are from central America, Mexico, Philipines, Korea, and other places. They attend a school designated a title 1 school, a pilot school struggling to make learning innovative but lacking the resources necessary to make it a reality.

My Project

By reading, " Down these mean streets", students will find a connection that is often lacking in traditional literature. They will come to understand history better through the eyes of someone who has similar experiences. In many ways my students walk down mean streets everyone day. Many times schools do not have the time to present students with literature that connects with they experience. My students lives will be transformed through grappling with the race issues that the book presents and by making historical connections. Didn't you ever pick up a book that you could have written? A book that told your story and that validated your experience. This book validates their experience.

I was once a former students who struggled to see the connections in the books I was expected to read.

It wasn't until college that I came across books that were written for me. I want my student to experience this in High School. I want them to know that they matter. That even though we live in a world that values the 1%,the 99% still matters.
