Students in my class use history as a way to understand the current state of the country. This year students will conduct research on different disenfranchised groups and develop a solution to the problems that confront these groups. These books will extend learning beyond the school walls as students explore race in the United States and understand the injustices rooted in policies that negatively impact BIPOC today. To support the student-led Project-based Learning (PBL) and literacy development students will read the book in class and at home, analyze current issues, and engage in academic discourse. As part of the project, students will be part of a reading club to help process race and injustice in the United States as well as develop a project that will address a community problem. The goal for the project is for students to identify a problem in their community, collaborate with their peers to develop a tangible solution, and critically think about the impact of their action on the community.
