Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 5th grade at a Title I school in South Florida. The majority of my students come from disadvantaged homes where English is their second language. Our families are strong despite the lack of opportunities and resources they possess.
Students at our school are hungry for opportunities, but need the resources to foster their interests and needs.
Many of our families support multiple children and cannot afford the extras that we take for granted. Our school acts as a hub at which families have access to resources beyond their personal reach.
My Project
My students recently received Kindle Fire tablets to support their literacy instruction. Students are incorporating them through book clubs, independent reading, and preparation for the computer-based texts. They are taking advantage of all of the digital resources our school and community offer.
My 5th graders are motivated to engage in more reading, but are having to juggle charging ports because of our limited access to wall outlets.
The use of the requested charging stations and cords would streamline and organize the charging process and allow all Kindles to be ready for the next day's instruction. The SD cards will allow students more access to downloadable books by increasing each device's storage capacity.
