Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My kindergarten students are mainly Hispanic and African American, from the highest poverty level, and 100% of our children receive free breakfast and lunch. They are low-performing and have the highest percentage of single mothers in the district. Our students are also foster children and several live with grandparents and other relatives other than their parents. A large percentage of our students take home backpacks from the Food for Kids program from the Oklahoma Regional Food Bank. Every day my students are faced with traumatic life events which hinder their ability to learn and grow as readers. Yet, they are eager to learn every day but need a bright, inviting, and exciting learning environment to have the best chances at success. With all the challenges they face, I need to give them the best learning opportunities especially since they are at the beginning stages of learning!
My Project
Do you have young, wiggly, active children who cannot stay still? My kindergarten students are young learners who need to have alternative seatings that will allow them to work in a comfortable environment and still be focused on learning to read. Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. They can stay engaged in their reading and become more involved in their learning. Especially since most of them have never been in a school setting. The flexible seating will provide opportunities for successes rather than confining them to possible failure.
I want to ensure our students are comfortable as possible to help keep them motivated on learning and focused on reading.
My students also need building blocks and writing materials to gain kinesthetic skills. The magnetic designer will help build hand-eye coordination. With schools having little to no funding, all of these materials will give my students the opportunity to learn in a comfortable environment and gain the necessary skills to be successful life-long readers.
