We Are Hungry for a Great Book, The Hunger Games!

My 30 students need a classroom set of "The Hunger Games" so that we can share a compelling, well-written book that will appeal to even the most reluctant readers.

My Students

When I read my copy of "The Hunger Games" to my students last year, they were entranced. Even some who said they hated reading would walk into class asking eagerly, "You're going to read Hunger Games today, right?" Right! Now, I want to put a copy of this thrilling book into each student's hand.

My school is a Title I middle school, meaning that a large percentage of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Many of my students have no money for extras, so I can't ask them to buy books for school. But, everyone deserves the experience of reading a book too good to put down. If every student had a copy of the book, we could discuss it in greater detail, doing justice to a novel with weight and depth, and doing right by students who need to know that reading is entertaining and empowering. This story has a fast-paced plot exciting enough to pull my students into the world of words and ideas, of imagination and inspiration.

My Project

"The Hunger Games" is rich with themes for discussion. How much does an individual owe to her family, her community, or her country? Is survival worth any cost? What makes a government just and enlightened, or corrupt and callous? Is poverty a form of social injustice? What does our love of reality television shows say about our own culture and society? But, even if the book doesn't make my students philosophers, it's bound to make them better, more enthusiastic readers.

When you fund projects like mine, you send my students an important message: we care about you and your education.

By providing books like "The Hunger Games", you may spark a love of reading, which leads in turn to greater learning. What could matter more?
