We are Growing at Jacob Riis!

My students need a meeting area rug, and a play area rug. We are adding a new 1st grade classroom this year (mine!) and we need places to sit and learn and to build and play.

My Students

My students are a wonderful group of young explorers. Their innate curiosity and joy in discovery make the classroom a lively, engaging space and motivates me to do everything I can to give them a strong foundation in learning. My students largely come from a low socioeconomic background, and nearly all are emergent English speakers.

Unfortunately, the amount of high quality learning materials in our classroom is a poor match for the enthusiasm and potential to be found there.

Having a largely ELL populated classroom means that my students are learning English as well as basic literacy and math. They benefit greatly from high quality multimodal materials. Given that we are a Title I school, and our resources are severely limited. Over the past few years our community of donors have helped to create classrooms that transcend these economic limitations, and have allowed our children and teachers the benefit of the highest quality learning resources and materials from art supplies to new libraries to robotics. Truly, we have seen the maxim 'if you can dream it, you can do it' come to life in our classrooms.

My Project

We are adding a new first grade class to the school, which means our team of first grade teachers will include a third first grade teacher and a new class and classroom next year. We are so excited to be expanding, and making room for more students, most of whom are alums from our kindergarten. As usual this does mean a lot of work and gathering resources for our administration and staff. We will be converting a middle-school classroom into this new classroom. Principal among a list of needed materials are carpets for the room, which is currently completely bare. We need one carpet that we can use for morning meeting, circle time, and large group lessons. We need a second carpet for our block area, where the children can build and engage in dramatic play.
