Unlike typical high school programs which focus primarily on choral music, our vocal students perform a diverse array of vocal music that includes jazz, folk songs, musical theater songs, classical songs, multi-cultural, and contemporary or self-composed songs. Our students audition to attend our school and every opportunity to perform and receive professional feedback adds to the growth of every student.
Festival performances provide the opportunity to be heard and to receive invaluable feedback from the performing experience.
Unfortunately, because our students are auditioned, they cannot participate in district level festivals (that's a whole 'nuther story).
But these hard-working and enthusiastic students are ready to perform at a national jazz festival: to perform at a high level, experience other groups performing at a high level, and to travel outside their home areas and be representatives for their school.
My Project
Our students will sing in one of the premier jazz festivals in the country. They will receive adjudications from some of the finest artists in the field. And they'll get to hear singers and bands from around the country, along with great professional performers.
A festival of this caliber will inspire our students to learn and perform at an even higher level of competency.
Our regional high school activities association excludes our auditioned students from performing/competing at regional festivals, which means we need to travel out of our area to learn from and be inspired by other high-caliber school programs.
For students from a small arts-focused school, cultural and historical highlights which enrich their understanding of the jazz idiom are invaluable lifetime experiences.
