My Students

Have you ever met a real life author? My students will soon have the pleasure of meeting the author of the novel Blue and would like to learn more about our home state of North Carolina and polio. We would also like copies of the sequel, Comfort.

My students are 8th graders who sometimes think reading isn't cool enough.

We have just begun the novel Blue by a home state author and the kids love it! It has them interested in the US polio epidemic and the US home front during WWII. We would like to feed their interest with the sequel to the novel and books about polio and North Carolina.

My Project

My students need 10 copies of the book Comfort and other books about North Carolina and Polio. The students will use the books to teach themselves more about polio and North Carolina before meeting the author of the novel Blue. When they meet the author they will be knowledgeable about polio and their home state. This will give the students the needed background knowledge to engage and learn from a published book author. They will also have the opportunity to read the sequel and have a chance to talk to her about it.

Our students have shown a spark while reading this novel.

We hope that the sequel and the extra nonfiction books about polio and our home state will help some of them turn that spark into a furnace of learning!
