My students are incredible. They come from a variety of different backgrounds. Many are from economically challenged parts of town, some had riots in their neighborhood recently and even more have parents who fled war-torn parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia. My students have several languages spoken at home. Our school populations represent 30 countries.
My students have a genuine concern for others in this world, and they just need a little help.
They like to meet and greet visitors and new students, and they love to move and talk! Many of them are being raised in single-parent households, some students move every few weeks, and even more receive free lunch and breakfast at school. A few students are homeless. They need positive interactions with others.
My Project
Sports brings people together. Our Student Council team wants to partner with Special Olympics Unified Sports teams. We want to break down the barriers of the stereotypes about people with intellectual disabilities in a really fun way. We want to build the outdoor/indoor games to partner with Speical Olympics. We already have two drills, wood, some nails, and screws. We need one more drill and plywood for our team of builders.
Our hope is that all by partnering with the Unified Sports team that we can have fun and build meaning relationships.
We want everyone to feel a sense of belonging! We need plywood to build the corn hole games. The PVC pipes, drills, and saws will be used to build the Ladder golf game. The wood, nails, and screws will be used to build the paintball game. This will be a great project for all to build and develop mutually rewarding relationships and where everyone feels accepted and respected.
