This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from diverse backgrounds in the city of Philadelphia. 99 percent of my students come from low income households. My classroom is a regular education classroom with some special needs children, as well. My children are enthusiastic and eager to learn to read. Literacy is a big part of our day, whether it be listening to stories, reading or writing.
My students deserve the opportunity to use technology during literacy workstation time.
I am doing my best to instill a love of learning in my children and want to expose them to as many opportunities as I can.
My Project
Having a working listening center in the classroom will allow a small group of children to work independently during literacy. Children love to listen to stories and having the opportunity to listen to a story on a CD, while following along in a book, is super-exciting!
A listening center will provide an opportunity for my students to listen to a variety of text on CD and keep them engaged, while improving their literacy skills.
Hearing a book on a CD helps students to see how the words on a page come alive in an expressive way. It helps focus on the sounds of the words read without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading.
