This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have just completed my thirty-ninth year of teaching. Some ask me why I am still teaching. It is not about the money, it's about my children!
Every child who has entered my classroom has become like a son or daughter to me.
I want for each of them the same that I wished for my sons - to become happy, productive life-long learners. Our classroom is a family. We celebrate each others' successes and offer encouragement when someone is struggling.
My Project
The Learning Alive Studio will provide my students with an interactive way of learning letters, numbers, and reading skills. The curriculum's twenty-six alphabet cards spring to life in 3D through augmented reality. Each card features an animal that corresponds the letter, and seem intelligent as they respond to the questions and sentences that the students build. Even reluctant learners enthusiastically respond to the animals, sounds, and interactive learning. Letters Alive builds students' phonemic awareness and phonics skills. There are vocabulary cards to strengthen comprehension and reinforce concepts of print through sentence-building exercises. Math Alive builds students' number sense, computational skills, understanding of data and probability, pattern and shape recognition, measurement skills, and introduces them to concepts of money and time. The materials will also provide a fun way to provide interventions or enrichment to all learners.
We are looking for new ways to keep our kindergarten students actively engaged in learning while reducing our carbon footprints.
Next year we will have a ninety minute reading block. It is hard to find activities my kindergarten students can do independently while I am engaged in guided reading groups and individual student conferences. I am trying to move away from pencil and paper activities which often provide little more than busy work.
I cannot imagine anything that will keep my students better engaged than using awesome augmented reality. I never dreamed that 3D would be possible as a classroom tool. I am excited to have this chance.
