Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are wonderful kindergarteners in a Title I school where many of my classroom families receive a free or reduced-cost lunch, come from low-income homes and are English Learners. Approximately 40% of my students are from these underserved families. My calling, as their teacher, is to not only lay the foundation of learning within their minds but to to give them a stable learning environment.
My kindergarteners are learning in a classroom that is distance learning at this moment due to the effects of COVID 19, we have been learning from home for the first 16 weeks of school and will continue to do so for the time when we possibly return in early 2021.
This does not change the fact that I still desire for my students to learn in 1) an environment that is kid-centered; 2) filled with hands-on materials(although they may be digital to learn counting, reading, writing, cooperative learning and sharing and books about equity3) filled with kid-friendly, language arts learning activities for getting to know one another 4) filled with positive reinforcement and a warm virtual hug for every child that learns from me each day.
My Project
Our classroom is preparing for our Holidays Around the World Unit. Students will learn about how our diverse group of learners celebrate in their family's country of origin and how that our diversity brings us together rather than separating us apart. We are a classroom family.
It is truly difficult to teach equity and inclusion without the proper literature, materials and resources to present to the children in which they are able to see themselves as someone who is: SPECIAL, INCLUDED and EQUALLY VALUED--in light of the recent uncertainty in the United States these materials are a must to bring this type of education to life in the classroom and truly should be a must have for the classroom of today, students will be welcomed with open arms to learn and celebrate!
It is of the utmost importance that my students see themselves in the books read to them in both Spanish and English, that their voices are heard through conversation and writing and all of our activities encourage acceptance of one another. Students will be encouraged to have conversations about equity as they learn about all the winter holidays around the world. We will write about ourselves with journals Student will have a passport as they "visit" countries around the world help them feel included as they see themselves in our celebrations. We will create a poinsettia from Mexico for Las Posadas, a crown for 3 Kings Day, a colorful Diwali Necklace, a gingerbread man from Germany and a St. Lucia Wreath from Sweden! My students will celebrate equity with multicultural projects from around the world. I will create mulitculural curriculum for my students utilizing my Teacher Pay Teachers gift card to purchase clipart and purchase pre-made lessons for the the celebrations!
