This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are bright, inquisitive, and love a challenge. I teach enrichment groups for gifted students throughout my day. Gifted students come in all shapes, sizes, and abilities. I teach some gifted students with reading disabilities as well as bilingual students still catching up on English skills.

Students learn best when they can relate to what they are reading; these engaging science texts teach about the importance of clean water, our duty to be good environmental stewards, and the impact of oil spills while helping students connect to Native American cultures and their sense of wonder about the world around them.

I plan to use these books with my 2nd-grade reading enrichment group. I am trying to incorporate more climate science in with our reading and Native American cultures is one of the major social studies topics for 2nd graders. These books are the prefect jumping off place for discussions about how to be good stewards of the earth. Clean water is especially important in our community since the major industry is farming.

In our rural district, most of the families work in agriculture. Over 80% of our school children are of Hispanic descent, and many of them are English Language Learners. Most students participate in the free lunch program.
