The bins are already being used by the students. They are now able to easily find the favorite books! The books you helped provide will play an important role in building my students' understanding of American history.\r\n\r\nWe won't be reading the new book until this winter because we need to build background knowledge for the students first. Our 5th grade standards span from exploration to the United States becoming a country, so we're taking a careful, scaffolded approach. We'll first read about an explorer to understand what drove people to the New World. Then we'll read about the Boston Tea Party to see the tensions building between the colonies and Britain. Only then will we be ready to read the book this project bought: I Survived the American Revolution, 1776. By the time students open this book, they'll have the context they need to truly understand the setting, the conflict, and why this moment in history mattered so much.\r\n\r\nReading in my class means all students have a book to follow along in. We take turns reading aloud, which helps build fluency and keeps everyone engaged. We pause to talk about vocabulary words and make sure everyone understands what's happening in the story. Since we're in the library, our focus is really on enjoying the story together. These read-alouds aren't about drilling comprehension questions—they're about building background knowledge that will give students a much deeper understanding when they study this content more formally in their social studies class.\r\n\r\nI know the students will absolutely enjoy this book because in past experience, students love learning about history through stories. The I Survived series brings history to life in a way that textbooks simply can't. These stickers have some of the most popular themes with students and they are highly motivated to earn them. Thanks to your funding this over the summer, our sticker corner was fully stocked and ready in time for our \"Meet the Teacher\" open house before school starts. Getting to choose a sticker the first time a child steps foot into my room sets thing off on a positive note and helps me get to know the children by which stickers they choose.\r\n\r\nI also use the stickers in my classroom Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports (PBIS) system. My older students earn tokens by focusing and completing their work and making good choices. Then once a week or so, they can exchange their tokens for stickers. This keeps the rewards small, while giving them some agency in what they get for their reward. This also introduces the idea of saving up for something they want and making decisions like whether to get a single \"deluxe\" sticker\" or several \"bargain stickers\" with their tokens.
