Cardstock is one of the most versatile mediums to elevate students' work. When they make cards or notes, they feel more important and substantial on cardstock. Math games hold up better on cardstock and are so much more inviting in bright colors. Art projects hold up better on cardstock than paper, and it can become an amazing construction material for learning about geometric shapes or diaramas. The bright colors also look amazing when kids need to make presentation boards for robotics, History Day, and so much more.\r\n\r\nJust today, one of my 5th-grade students needed materials to make a display board about Ukraine for another class, and I was able to give her bright blue and yellow to make her work pop.\r\n\r\nI can't tell you the number of times that having cardstock on hand in so many colors has come in handy in my own class or to share with other teachers. After the students have done their math, they get to decorate their design with air-dry clay. Thanks to this restock, we have the materials to continue this fun project tradition.\r\n\r\nThe 1st and 2nd graders have been using the new graph paper to also learn about area and perimeter. 2nd graders were given the challenge to make as many shapes as they could with an area of 24 squares and then compare the different perimeters depending on their shapes. We also talked about what the most efficient shape is to maximize area and minimize perimeter.\r\n\r\nIt's been fun times all around. I've found that kids are much more enthusiastic readers when they can highlight as they go. They also remember and connect with the information better. My 4th and 5th grade students recently read articles about Sandhill Cranes and then produced art projects for our local Sandhill Crane Art contest. The kids learned a lot through their reading and writing assignment, and we even had 3 students place in the contest.
