Water Battery to Store Solar Energy

Help me give my students solar panels, a water turbine generator, power inverter, and rain barrels to create a water battery.

My Project

What happens to the excess solar power produced during the day? In California, most of it is wasted because the state does not have the infrastructure to store the power. I heard a report on the radio where one community is building a water "battery" to store the power for later use.

My students will build their own water battery to test out the feasibility of a green way to store electricity created by solar power.

We will use the solar panels to create electricity. Then using the power inverter, we will power the sump pump to move water to a higher level from one rain barrel to another. Then we will release the water through a hose and gravity will move it through a water generator turbine creating electricity for the portable power station.

This is a hands-on STEM activity solving a real-world problem using green energy to fight climate change.
