Eager but dependent, happy but confused, at risk but capable. My students are just like any other child in America who begins their first years of schooling. However, these children have little to no prior knowledge of communication and conversation experiences, lack the ability to listen attentively in whole group, experience new language barriers, many with only one parent present in their life or a grandparent raising them.
My goal is to teach my students to have a love for reading everything and to listen to the world around them developing a passion for wanting more.
I serve 13 boys and 8 girls. My school is a school of choice specifically STEAM. We implement and integrate science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math to help students learn to build the curious mind.
My students need a listening center in our classroom so they can become independent thinkers and doers and intentional learners. We are asking for a listening station hub and six wireless headphones so that the children are not constrained by cords and frustration in having to just listen to one book with many friends attached to the same player. We will use this listening center for small guided reading lessons, sight word practice, vocabulary building, math practice, directed art, and MORE!
Your donations toward our project will allow active high functioning children no option but to slow down and WATCH, LOOK, and truly LISTEN!
My students will get a new excitement for learning and listening and begin to use active listening skills at an important milestone in their lives. Books will become interactive as the teacher digitally records her own voice, asking students to show specific reading strategies throughout the entire text. Math lessons can be digitally recorded as struggling students need a slower walk through of certain skills and standards. Science and Social Studies digitally recorded lessons can be more specific and differentiated for the specific learner.
We are so excited to see the art of listening unravel in our classroom!
