The urban middle school where I teach has an enrollment of about 550 sixth through eighth grade students. Our school is extremely diverse, both culturally and socioeconomically. One issue that many of our students face is transiency. We often see students that have moved multiple times in one year. Sometimes they have just moved to a new house/apartment and other times they are living with relatives, in a car, or at the shelter. As a school, we do our best to provide as much stability to the families we serve as we can. Donations to our project for a new washer and dryer will help countless students and families.
My Project
My urban middle school students are not down with looking or feeling unclean. Like all middle school students, appearance and hygiene are really starting to matter to them.
No student should ever experience shame based on the condition or quality of their clothes.
Some of our students regularly attend school in unwashed clothes or even ill-fitting clothes because they wore whatever was clean, even if it belongs to another family member. As you can imagine, when you are self-conscious about your clothes you are not focused on learning in school. Donations to this project will ensure that the students and families at our school have access to laundry equipment despite whatever situation they find themselves in.
