This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I'm proud to say that I work at the school that I attended as a child. It is high poverty, Title I school in New York. All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch.
My students are faced with many challenges inside and outside the classroom.
They struggle personally and academically and have diverse needs. My class consists of general education students and children who receive special education services. Students living in homeless shelters, travel from other parts of the city to our school every day. Families that are new to the country (English New Language learners) have the added burden of learning to communicate in English. Despite the challenges they face daily, my students are filled with energy, are happy, and motivated to learn. They are scientists, singers, mathematicians, leaders, comedians, readers, writers, teachers, dancers, me, and you; they are everything!
My goal is to make my students' school environment comfortable and their learning experiences, creative and challenging to prepare them for the future. I want my students to feel safe from the outside world, so they can focus on learning and simply being kids.
My Project
Let's talk about the tiny elephant in the room.....LICE! They are common in classrooms, making themselves at home right on my students' pretty little heads.
They are annoying and very expensive to treat.
Students are allowed to stay in school with eggs/nits in their hair. Once the lice are live and crawling, the students are sent home for treatment. Our families don't always have the means to properly get rid of the lice so in no time they return.
Please help us keep lice away. There have been several outbreaks in my room this year. Children often spread it to classmates and siblings so it can easily get out of control. This project includes 20 treatment kits, shampoo and conditioner that should keep their hair clean and free of lice. If we have the needed products available, families can be sent home with enough to treat the whole family and decrease re-infestation.
