Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students in the functional skills program range in age from 14-22 and present with a diagnosed intellectual disabilities similar to moderate cognitive impairments. They travel to and from high school with door to door transportation; due to their cognitive limitations, and the dangerous risks involved in traveling across the city via public transportation.
We aspire to teach our students the necessary adaptive and functional life skills to be happy, successful, and contributing members of society.
They become "employees" in the school run Copy Center. They work recycling within the school and delivering water to classrooms.
Academically, it is vital for our students to gain the knowledge needed to be successful active members in society. They need to be able to access public transportation, make the appropriate change at a store, and to request help or clarification. Self care is a basic skill that needs to be explicitly taught and practiced.
My Project
Our classroom focuses on making learning engaging and collaborative. The material in this project, a Maytag Washer and Dryer will help implement a strong functional and life skills training curriculum. This washer and dryer set will facilitate active student participation and skill acquisition that supports transition.
The Maytag washer and dryer purchased will encourage the students to engage in a task that they will use over their entire lifetime.
Students doing their own laundry with their classmates, will provide an opportunity to work and talk with each other, further developing their communication skills while building transition proficiency.
Throughout our school day, there are opportunities for our students to use our classroom kitchen and providing laundry services in our classroom will only enhance our functional skills program.
With this project, students will gain confidence working with a small group of peers and/or independently. Whether my students will be working in a copy center, classroom coffee delivery, recycling or laundry center, they will be gaining the transition skills needed to lead a successful and independent life.
